Libya Targets 355,000 bpd at Sharara Oil Field by Mid-2027

Libya Targets 355,000 bpd at Sharara Oil Field by Mid-2027

Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) and Akakus Oil Operations are targeting a production increase at the Sharara oil field to 355,000 barrels per day (bpd) by mid-2027.

The target would lift output by around 20,000 bpd from the field’s current level of about 335,000 bpd. The two sides discussed the plan during a technical and financial meeting in Tripoli on August 17.

Sharara Expansion Focuses on Reliability

The NOC and Akakus agreed on several priorities to support the increase. These include advancing Sharara’s reservoir development plan, upgrading surface facilities and completing approved maintenance work. They also plan to accelerate safety and fire-protection projects. The focus comes after a fire damaged the field’s main 30-inch export pipeline in March. Akakus contained the incident and maintained oil exports, according to the NOC.

The companies will also hold two workshops with the NOC, Akakus and international partners to discuss field development and drilling plans for 2027.

Another Step in Libya’s Oil Output Push

Sharara remains one of Libya’s most important crude-producing assets, and higher output would support the NOC’s wider push to raise national production.

The 355,000 bpd target also shows that Libya’s production strategy now depends not only on bringing fields back online, but on improving mature fields through drilling, reservoir management and infrastructure upgrades.

For Libya, the challenge will be turning these targets into sustained production while protecting the infrastructure that connects major fields to export terminals.
