The National Oil Corporation (NOC) has delivered a new shipment of scorpion antivenom to several municipalities in southern Libya. The move aims to strengthen emergency healthcare services during the peak summer season, when scorpion stings increase across desert and rural areas.
The NOC’s Sustainable Development Department carried out the delivery in cooperation with Spanish energy company Repsol. Health centers in Ubari, Bent Baya, Al-Gharifa, Wadi Atba, Al-Awaynat, Germa, Al-Qaraqirah, Al-Sharqiya, and Al-Raqiba received the medical supplies.
Rising Seasonal Risk Across Southern Communities
The initiative focuses on improving rapid response capacity in remote regions where access to medical treatment remains limited. Local clinics in the south often face pressure during summer months as higher temperatures drive increased scorpion activity and more sting incidents.
The NOC said the program supports its wider commitment to community development in areas close to its oil operations. It also emphasized that early distribution of antivenom can reduce complications and save lives when administered quickly after a sting.
Health authorities have repeatedly warned that southern Libya faces seasonal spikes in scorpion stings. Rural infrastructure gaps and long travel distances to hospitals can increase the risk for patients if treatment is delayed. The latest shipment aims to close that gap by placing antivenom closer to affected communities.
This latest delivery builds on ongoing national efforts to expand access to scorpion antivenom across Libya. In recent years, health agencies and international partners have increased distribution to reduce fatalities during peak sting seasons.
Medical officials stress that fast treatment remains the key factor in survival cases. Antivenom works best when patients receive it soon after symptoms appear, especially in severe envenomation cases that affect children and elderly residents.
Southern municipalities will now rely on these new supplies as temperatures continue to rise. Health workers expect demand to stay high through the coming months, especially in remote desert areas.
