Greek Diplomat Alexis Konstantopoulos Named EU Ambassador to Libya

The European Union’s new ambassador to Libya, Alexis Konstantopoulos, officially began his mission after presenting his credentials in Tripoli on Sunday. The meeting with Mohamed Al-Mnifi, head of Libya’s Presidential Council, centered on bolstering bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in key areas.

Konstantopoulos conveyed greetings from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa. According to the Presidential Council’s media office, he emphasized the need for ongoing communication and coordination between Libya and the EU.

Discussions included Libya’s political process and efforts to reach a comprehensive and lasting settlement. Both sides stressed the importance of broad political participation that involves different Libyan factions and ensures the process remains Libyan-led.

This appointment comes as the EU maintains active engagement with Libyan institutions to support political developments and the country’s progress toward greater stability and unified state institutions.

Konstantopoulos, a Greek diplomat, replaced Italian ambassador Nicola Orlando, who departed the post in September. Prior to this role, Konstantopoulos served as Greece’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, with additional responsibilities for Oman and Yemen. His experience across the Arab world and Middle East brings valuable regional insight to his position as head of the EU delegation in Libya.

The meeting highlighted both parties’ commitment to sustaining diplomatic dialogue and exploring ways to deepen cooperation. This is particularly significant given Libya’s ongoing political and institutional challenges.

As Konstantopoulos settles into his role, observers will watch how the EU delegation navigates Libya’s complex political environment and supports efforts to unify institutions. The ambassador’s regional expertise may help facilitate stronger ties and enhance EU influence in Libya’s stabilization process.
