Libyan Red Crescent Launches Air Bridge to Support Flood-Affected Southern Hospitals

The Libyan Red Crescent launched an air bridge from Benghazi to Ghat on September 30, 2026, to deliver essential supplies for families and hospitals affected by recent floods in southwestern Libya.

The operation is under the direct supervision of the organisation’s secretary-general as emergency teams continue responding to heavy rainfall and flooding in and around Ghat. The air bridge aims to replenish local stocks and strengthen the resources available to the Red Crescent’s Ghat branch.

Reports from September 29 confirmed ongoing flights between Benghazi and Ghat to maintain a steady flow of basic supplies to flood-affected communities. This follows several days of emergency operations after flash floods disrupted roads and raised water levels across the region.

Monitoring and Response in Flood-Affected Areas

The Ghat branch has been closely monitoring floodwaters in Ghat, Al-Barkat, Tahala, and Al-Awaynat. Teams reported rising water in valleys and runoff affecting roads that connect multiple communities. On September 27, the branch warned residents in vulnerable areas to prepare for possible evacuation as floodwaters approached residential neighborhoods.

In addition to delivering supplies, the branch has distributed aid to affected families and helped prepare temporary shelters for those displaced.

Wider Flood Impact and Emergency Alerts

Recent storms have placed several communities in southern and southwestern Libya on emergency alert. Tahala declared a state of emergency on September 26 due to concerns over flash floods and overflowing valleys. Emergency teams across Libya have raised readiness levels, assisted stranded residents, and issued warnings to avoid valleys, low-lying areas, and flooded roads.

The Benghazi-Ghat air bridge plays a critical role in sustaining the humanitarian response. It ensures that emergency supplies continue reaching the affected areas and supports the local Red Crescent branch’s capacity to manage relief efforts effectively.

Maintaining healthcare infrastructure and access during such natural disasters is vital. The timely delivery of medical supplies and humanitarian aid can reduce pressure on southern hospitals and help stabilize affected communities.
